BetterMuslim — Privacy Policy

BetterMuslim ("the app", "we", "us") helps Muslims track prayers, read the
Qur'an and Hadith, and build good habits with friends. This policy explains
what personal data we collect, why, and your choices. We collect only what
the app needs to function.
Information we collect
- Account information. Your email address and display name, used to create and sign you in to your account. Authentication is handled by our identity provider, Clerk.
- Location. When you check in for a prayer, the app uses your device's precise location at that moment to verify you are near a mosque (geofence). Location is used only for that check-in and is not shared with other users or tracked in the background.
- Photos. If you choose to attach a photo to a check-in, or set a profile picture, that image is uploaded to our private storage. Profile pictures are visible to your friends; check-in photos are private to you.
- Activity data. Prayer check-ins, jamaah (congregation) records, Qur'an and Hadith reading, points, streaks, achievements, bookmarks, and to-do items you create.
- Friends & social data. Your friend code, the friend connections you make, and the activity shown on your friends' leaderboard and activity feed (display name, avatar, points, streak, and that you checked in — never your location or check-in photos).
- Notifications. A push-notification token for your device, used to deliver prayer reminders and friend activity notifications.
- Usage analytics. Anonymous-by-default product analytics (e.g. screens viewed, check-ins) via PostHog, to understand how the app is used and improve it.
How we use your information
- To provide core features: prayer times, check-ins, points/streaks, Qur'an and Hadith reading, friends, and reminders.
- To verify prayer check-ins (location geofence) and prevent abuse.
- To send notifications you have enabled.
- To maintain, secure, and improve the app.
How your information is shared
We do not sell your personal data. We share data only with service providers that operate the app on our behalf:
- Clerk — authentication and account management.
- Amazon Web Services (AWS) — hosting and private storage of your data and uploaded images (region: Malaysia / ap-southeast-5).
- Expo — delivery of push notifications.
- PostHog — product analytics.
- Other users — only the limited social data described above is visible to friends you have added.
Data retention and account deletion
We keep your data while your account is active. You can permanently delete
your account and its associated data at any time, directly in the app:
open Profile → Delete account. This removes your profile,
check-ins, jamaah records, reading progress, bookmarks, achievements, friend
connections, uploaded photos, and your sign-in credentials. Deletion is
immediate and irreversible, except where limited retention is required by
law. You can also email us at the address below to request deletion.
Your rights and choices
- Access, correct, or delete your account data — delete it yourself via Profile → Delete account, or contact us.
- Control location and notification permissions in your device settings.
- Turn prayer reminders on or off in the app's Profile screen.
Children's privacy
BetterMuslim is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly
collect personal data from them.
Security
Data is transmitted over HTTPS and stored in access-controlled,
encrypted infrastructure. Uploaded images are kept in private storage and
served only via short-lived, signed links.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. Material changes will be
reflected here with a new "Last updated" date.
